subject: The long winter

Replying to a message from Steven Horn 1:17/67 to Gord Hannah,

About The long winter, On Thu May 03 2007
GH> complaining last night that over 6 months is enough already.

SH> Your wife is not the only one. My wife suggested that we consider
SH> moving to a warm climate which is a bit premature given that I have

As my wife has every place we look does not make sense, here we have family
3 of the 6 kids, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews. So
family does count. We would also be short of sunshine anywhere else.

SH> over two years to go before retirement. But she has a point: here

You two may decide to retire in Whitehorse..:-)

SH> we are in May and we still have show in the back yard and the %^$#&
SH> voles have done a wonderful job on our lawn.

We gave up on ours we have 3 large evergreens in our front lawn and the
fall out from them. So letting it go back to "the wild".

SH> And given that we can expect snow in September, we only have 3
SH> months of summer.

I agree the winter of '95 was a long one as well snow in Sept, gone in May.

SH> In the last while I've seen a lot of references to Northern
SH> Exposure, my favorite TV show about Alaska so maybe we all feel
SH> we're losing something. But it is tough to live up here although
SH> our goods and services are getting cheaper. We now have several box
SH> stores up here and have become the place to shop for everyone from
SH> Lower Post to Tok and much of the SouthEast.

The box store can be a double edge sword they do help bring prices down and
offer a bigger selection (which traditionally we did not have), but at the
cost of other smaller stores we had a General Store in our area the could
not compete and had to shut down after 3 generations of running it. It had
groceries, hardware, small amount of clothes. Yes even wood floors. I loved
the place.

Alas progress i suppose.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

We are a fine board trying to make it better.
