May I offer the following thought, from a person who has run these beasts for 
over a decade... (me).
If you don't have problems with what you're running, and if you don't want to 
add newer features, there may be no reason to upgrade or update your modem.
However,
If you have or find a problem and there is a newer ROM load that fixes it, 
you might want to consider updating.
If there is a new feature (be it FAX, CID, error correction, compression) 
added, you might want to consider upgrading.
I'll suggest that few of us are happy with the modem we bought throughout 
it's life of maybe 10 years without wanting to make some kind of update or 
upgrade.  Whether it be increased speed or function, most will want to 
upgrade somewhere along the line.  Were this not true, many would still be at 
300 Baud or less.
