The towing package was probably no more than two relays to operate the
lamps (one for each side) and a current sense relay in the feed to
sense the trailer lamp current. These days this can be just a winding
round a reed relay, the trailer lamp flasher inicator is driven by
this relay. Probably set up to indicate "good" if a lamp works, and if
there are two it probably won't tell if one of the pair fails.
