The more recent version is the space shuttle: With big enough engines

The "wings" of the Starfighter had edges so sharp they put cushions on
them during maintenance to keep the mechanics from getting slashed
from walking too close.  I think of them as swords for very close in
fighting if the fighter runs out of missiles and still has fuel.
