| subject: | 50-500mm Sigma Lens |
BG> Different strokes for different folks. I have a 400mm lens for the 35mm BG> and it has had usage at the most 10 times over the 40 years or so I've BG> owned it. It was the basis for my buying the Nikon TTL metering system BG> though. Trying to get close ups and after wasting a ton of film on BG> wrong exposure compensation calculations using a slide rule, I decided BG> the TTL metering system was the greatest thing ever invented. But on those 10 occassions when when you needed that 400mm, nothing else would have done the job... I used to have a 500mm Sigma mirror lens - I got a shot of a bird in Scotland that I could never have got otherwise. Yes, I COULD have tried sneaking closer - but that eagle was across a valley *and* up a vertical cliff on the other side. And yes, I was using a TTL metering OM1. With very long or macro lenses, it's the only way to go. For my general snapping, I preferred the 75-150mm zoom; the best GP 35mm lens available back then. My style of general photography was mostly to stand back and observe, rather than get all up close and personal and effectively inject my presence into the picture.
