Well gang, I've been thinking about this too, and have been in touch
with my NEC (Network Echo Coordinator). His reply, which echoed my
sentiments, is that if Parrots means anything to anyone out here,
instead of bailing out for the Internet, stick around and get your
friends out here too. That's all we can do.
IMHO, the 'net is going to be a fad. Many people will get out there for
a while, then leave because most of the newsgroups are so vicious. BBS
sysops need to publicize that there are alternatives to the Internet.
Don't quit because it's getting rough, put up a few signs at computer
stores and swap meets advertising your bbs. Take out a cheap ad
in your local swap/trade publication. Publish a simple instructions
article on how to get TO a bbs--many people don't know HOW, because the
software didn't come already pre-loaded with phone numbers on their new
computers. Send that article to your local paper or news station. You
never know what'll make the press take notice these days.
Don't complain--DO something. I'm only one person, and this is very much
a volunteer position. I can only do so much to attract new users by
myself. If you want Parrots (and Fidonet as a whole) to continue to
exist, ACT.
