        No. If you clean your system without knowing the effects of the
infection you're dealing with, you may end up with NO data. If you back it 
p,
and then clean it, and it trashes your system, you can then restore and clean
selectively. Since tape wouldn't transmit boot sector virii, you could 
estore
one directory at a time, and scan the files as they were restored. It's a lot
better than losing everything and having to roll forward from a recent backup
(if one even exists).
