Yeah, I think it's pretty much essential that a sysop be interested in what 
it is that he's specializing in. As the world population grows, there's bound 
to be more and more people who will have similar interests or opposing 
viewpoints who need a platform to express their opinions. Takes two sides to 
have a conversation, or create a learning environment...
