Strange how flying instructors get stuff right into the head, isn't it!
I find myself doing things almost instinctively, because he bashed it
in so deep. I couldn't have told you if I use aileron or rudder to
keep the wings level on takeoff and approach -- so I watched myself
last week. It's rudder. Thinking back, I remember now ... Ivan
drummed RUDDER - RUDDER - RUDDER into me before I ever got to solo.
I had a partial engine failure half way across the English Channel
a few years ago (landed safely back at base, but one cylinder was
all shot). Went through the checklist in my mind once I'd decided
what was happening, and found everything done (mixture full rich, fuel
pump on, full throttle,...). My daughter, sitting in the seat beside
me, said she'd never seen my hands move so fast as they did in that
first couple of seconds.
Doesn't make me a good pilot (nothing will do that) but it does make
me safer!
