Shanghai airport closed after accident
SHANGHAI - April 12, 1998 09:25 a.m. EDT - Shanghai's interna-
tional airport was closed on Sunday and one witness said an aircraft
appeared to have skidded off the runway.
The witness told Reuters he had seen a plane sitting at the edge
of the runway. It was not clear whether there were any casualties or
what had caused the incident.
Later, a Chinese airline official at the airport confirmed that
a Thai Airways International flight arriving from Bangkok had over-
shot the runway on landing.
Another official said none of the passengers had been seriously
hurt and all had been taken safely off the aircraft.
The airport was closed for several hours, an official with the
Shanghai Municipal Aviation Bureau said.
Travellers said all flights in and out of the airport had been
canceled.
