A memory stick is like one of the old syquest 44mb or 88mb hard disk
cartridges. If you can boot from them then there is some mechanism to read
a boot sector which instructs the machine what to read next. It would not
surprise me to find that the usb driver does this even after the system is
booted.
We once had a virus spread by syquest cartridges, they were booting even
after the system was up and running. Simply moving a cartridge from one
machine to another, not even accessing it, just moving and mounting it was
enough to infect the second system.
I know that since you can boot from CD, a boot sector virus could be spread
by CD, this is probably also true of USB since it's possible to boot from
USB.
Geo.
