 I wouldn't call him timid in the least.  More like blase and 
 sardonic.  He's been there, done that, lost everything, and now 
 he is mostly amused with life.  Keeps getting thrown into the 
 middle of things, though.  Likes to offer enigmatic comments and 
 helpful hints.
