The only place I can think of a use for it is as a backbone on _LARGE_
sites because of its 500 m segment length. The networking catalogues I
get still include an amazing proportion of stuff for thick ethernet.

No way! They didn't have the expertise!
I used to work for another Lucas subsiduary - called CAV in those days,
as an electronics development engineer and the quality of the circuit
design from Lucas Electrical was unbelievable. I was given one to look
at for our (CAV's) use and I've never seen such rubbish (we didn't use
it ). We had to totally rework the circuit from another site
"developed" (more like thrown together) for us :-(.
(Since the "take over" of Varity by Lucas the top management is now all
from Varity and I believe they've stayed in Buffalo and not come over
here).
