Meaning left-handed version. If you read up on Louis Pasteur, one of his
investigations concerned left and right handed versions of tartaric acid.
Life on earth produces right-handed chemicals (though I don't know how they
decide which is left and which is right), and the left-handed versions
can't be used like the right-handed versions - ie you can't digest the
left-handed version of glucose.
