Commercial time: There's a kit, sold by Jaycar, that's a five pointed star made up of 30 leds, driven by a 20 pin 8051 derived 89C2051 micro. The leds flash in nifty patterns, like rotation of various bits in both directions, flashing, buildup and down from the centre out and in, and a rotation of running lights bouncing around the perimeter. It repeats after about a minute. Very fetching. About 4 inches across, uses normal red leds. Needs a 150mA dc supply with enough volts to drive a 7805 reg, so 9 volts is ok as is. 12 volts would need a heatsink for the 7805.
