Bill, I use Couriers myself. There's nothing mystical about them, or any
other modem, when it comes to compression and CPS rates. I believe you
stated that the file was compressed about 45% with ZIP, that it was
about five megs and that you obtained about 4400cps while transfering
it.
 
It depends on what was contained in that zip file, text files, like
typical PKT files, usually compress about 68% with ZIP, so there might
have been some room for futher compression there. More important,
though, is how many and what size of the files in that ZIP were. ZIP
compresses each individual file independent of the rest of the file. In
addition, the directory, comment (if any) and the file name tag at the
start of the compressed file are NOT compressed. All of that can be
compressed by modem protocol compression. This combination of factors
probably caused the faster than normal cps rate, and not the fact? that
"USR Couriers really do fly" (my quotes).
