KN> I have EXTREMELY mixed feelings regarding the dubbing of
KN> Miyazaki's films.
So do I, Disney has done a VERY GOOD job on dubbing, but.... I dunno
about theseones....
KN> liberties taken in the translation or voice inflection.
As far as I know, the contract says that Disney CAN NOT CHANGE the
movies either way, music, dialogue, cut the picture, etc. etc.,
KN> original Japanese dialoge and using English sub-titles would seem most
KN> appropriate.
But... you think kids will like it?? Maybe they'll do it like in ToyStory
here in Mexico, at the movies, they had it with subtitles, and dubbed,
I watched it in English, then rented the video in Spanish.... of course
the jokes were not the same, when Woody says "DRAW!" and the board
draws a pistol... now you know that that joke is "two sided" but the ones
that does not speak English, didnt' get it, also when the pig said.. Look!
I'm Picasso. Those kind of jokes translated doesn't "fit" to another
language.
KN> Many of Miyazaki's films may look childish and whymsical,
You said the words "may look" but some of them are not for very small
kids.
KN> but take on issues or items that children would not
KN> understand, Porco Rosso, or Nausica come to mind,
Or my favorite, Whispers of the Heart, :) although children would LOVE
to see Kiki's Delivery Service.. :)) I wonder how Disney would translate
them??? I CAN'T WAIT!!!! But they say that there is going to be a delay
and they are going to release the first one on April '98 :((
I say.. if they do a good job.. GO AHEAD and take all the time you want! :)
Just don't destroy a masterpiece :)
KN> but others like Totoro should have English Dialoge.
I saw Totoro Dubbed and raw.... VERY GOOD job :)
Greets from another Anime/Disney fan in Mexico :)
Marcia
