Hi again, Rob;
II> Unfortunately true. But the ones that know the "tricks" are likely
II> either Hams, are friendly with Hams, or have a fairly solid background
II> in communication electronics.
RD> Agreed. The persistant ones are the ones who have been doing it so
RD> long they know enough trick to get what they want done in their
RD> jamming. These are also the ones most likely to get nabbed as they get
RD> set in their ways of jamming and are easy to get a pattern on.
Yep! Just like any criminal activity... many criminals have been sent to
jail because they always use the same MO, (Method of Operation). Jammers
are no different. They think that if they are driving around in a car
that they can't be found... WRONG! It makes it harder, but certainly not
impossible, and a lot of them just sit at home and throw carriers! Also,
make a note of any patterns, like what times/days they are active. This
can tell you what time they go to/get off of work or school, or if they
have all day and all night free, (unemployed/retired). This in turn can
give you an idea of where they work: Most offices run from 9 to 5 days
only, but factories tend to start earlier, and most school classes, (at
least in the US), tend to start around 9 and let out about 3:00 or 3:30.
And if they tend to jam during "working hours" it could mean that they
have days off other than Saturday/Sunday, and if the pattern changes
every few days or every week, they could be working a rotating shift.
(Those are MURDER!!!) If there are 3 distinct time intervals a day when
they jam, it could mean that they work a split shift, like is often done
in restraunts and fast-food joints. So it's a good idea to record the
times that jamming occurs and WHO gets jammed, what frequencies, etc.
It can give lots of clues about the person's schedule, habits & dislikes.
II>> I would be more inclined to load up all the power I had, point the
II>> beam right down the children's throats, and start calling CQ on CW.
RD>> So would I if I were ticketed for 10m.
II> Nice thing about holding a high-class license. ;-} I don't know how
II> the licensing and priveledges run in VE-land, so I don't know what
II> would be required for you to operate there.
RD> OK... Here we have four levels of ticket:
RD> BASIC: no-code ticket,all amateur bands 50MHz up in any mode. 250
RD> watts output 5WPM CW: gives you the HF bands of 80 and 160m.
RD> 12WPM CW: gives you all HF bands from 40m to 10m.
RD> ADVANCED: lets you build and fix your own radios, repeaters etc and
RD> run the full legal output limit for a Canadian amateur.
Similar to what we have here:
Novice: CW segments on 80-10 except WARC bands, and voice/CW on 10 M,
222 MHz and 1296 MHz bands. (5 WPM code)
Technician (No-code): 50 MHz and up, all modes.
Technician Plus: All priveledges of Novice and Tech. (5 WPM Code)
General: Priveledges on all band, & all modes, not all sub-bands. (13 WPM)
Advanced: Same as General, more sub-bands. (13 WPM)
Extra: All U.S. Amateur Priveledges. (20 WPM)
The power limit in all of the Novice segments is 200 Watts PEP,
regardless of the class of license. On most other frequencies, the
power limit is 1500 Watts PEP. (1000 Watts CW/FM/Digital or around 300
Watts output on AM.)
II>> licensed Hams, they KNOW how stiff the consequences can be! (Like a
II>> $2,000 fine
RD>> Here the consequences may be fine, jail or both under the Canadian
RD>> Radio Act. More likely the consequences will be a fat lip,black-eye
RD>> and a busted radio. Especially now during this emergency...
II> I wonder if there isn't a law about interfering with emergency
II> communications, (other than governmental emergency services)? If not,
II> maybe it's time to contact your Parliment (?) member and start
II> agitating.
RD> Ivy it already exists and is in the Canadian Radio Act.
RD> The problem is getting someone to actually go out and ENFORCE it.
RD> But then they don't have the budget or the manpower......
Well, it's in the law here, too, but like you said, there are no teeth in
it any more. Perhaps if we could get it written into civil law so that
the local cops would know they had jurisdiction. That way if you are
being interfered with, especially while carrying emergency traffic, you
could call the local law and have them look into it. The only problem
then is if they can shake an officer loose from whatever s/he is doing at
the time. OF course, _WE_ would have to be ready to PROVE who it was,
preferably by getting out our DFs and leading a DF hunt...
