Many devices have AUI/ThickNet 10Base-5 connectors on them, but any
reasonable person will immediately convert that through a transceiver to
either coax/ThinNet 10Base-2 or UTP 10Base-T. I have exactly one client left
who has an actual run of ThickNet, and that has survived only because it is a
factory floor where it would be more expensive to replace it. Even that one
client uses UTP for runs in new areas of their facility.
Most mainframe operations we deal with have SNA, "boa" channel cables, or
ESCON fiber. If a mainframe operation has Ethernet, it is likely that it was
installed fairly recently and that it is UTP.
