Hi, Rob;

RD>> If you have seen the news then you know what has been going on up
RD>> here with the freezing rain storms...
RD> Was too busy with our mess up here to even get near a Tv for more
RD> than a few minutes for the 6pm local news.

Understood. I read, (and crossposted AND saved!), an account by Rob
Dennis, (another VE), about how the Hams got into the act up in Eastern
VE-land. It's really a mess! Even in Maine, there were still people
without power 10 days after the storm passed! I'm certain that the Ham
activities saved a lot of lives, not to mention carrying a lot of health
and welfare traffic, which eased the minds of a lot of friends/relatives
outside the stricken area. If there were no other justification for Ham
radio, ARES/RACES and the NTS, that's plenty right there for me!

II> been over a week. Several have died, from hypothermia or CO...
RD> Same thing here. People running a generator INSIDE the house and
 RD> running a wood stove with a partly-blocked chimney.

Their brains must have been half-frozen to even CONSIDER using such CO
generators inside! :-<

II> ... I hope you find the twit and give
 II> 'em a well-deserved "vacation" from being on the air. >SMASH!< ;-o
RD> It is one of local idiots who has done the same stunts before.
RD> They will be delt with shortly.

'Bout time, huh? IMO, the time to deal with morons like that is BEFORE
there's a communications emergency. Reminds me of something that happened
back in my 11 M days... A good friend was on his way home from work, and
he stopped accross the intersection from a school bus discharging kids.
Just as one little girl ran out in front of the bus to get to her waiting
mother, some rectal orfice passes the bus and nails the kid. So my friend
grabbed the mic and said on Channel 11, "[Call letters] to base, cops and
an ambulance to the corner of [Street names], kid hit by car." In the
aparoximately 4-5 seconds that it took him to say that, the local 11 M
jammer had a carrier on him, then said, (exact quote!), "Get that GARBAGE
offa here and on Channel 9 where it belongs!" A real scrooge! One has to
wonder how he would feel if it was HIS kid that got nailed!?!?

RD>> This was NOT the time nor the place to be an idiot and this jack-ass
II> The RIGHT time to pull crap like that is _NEVER_, but some people just
II> can't understand that. What kind of a sadist does it take...?
 RD> No sadist Ivy.
 RD> This jerk...

Don't insult jerks. :-/

RD> is well praticed at what it does,it just chose the wrong
RD> time to prove how much of an idiot they are and provide a target for
RD> the tracking team that was active just for this sort of thing.

Heh heh... I hope you nailed him good!
...

II> I am getting ready to build a Handi-Finder with a mod that makes it
II> switchable between "Figure-8" and "Cartioid" patterns... The hardest
II> part is finding the IC chip called for...
RD> What chip is it? I can look it up in my cross referances and see if
 RD> it it still available.

It's a CD4047. It puts out a complimentary square wave, (One output line
goes high when the other goes low). Frequency is controlled by a single
R and C. My old (1987) ECG Semiconductors Master Replacement Guide lists
ECG4047B as a replacemwnt. It's a monostable/astable multivibrator in a
14-pin DIP package. No other info is given besides the pinout. I didn't
find it in the one parts catalog I have, (Johnson Shop Products in
California. They seem to have almost everything electronic that nobody
else seems to have).

RD>> It would if there were enough people willing ot take the time to
RD>> learn how to use the APRS software to do DF-ing.

To learn it ya gotta have the equipment, (well, I s'poze booklearning works
too), and to have the equipment ya gotta have the money. I have all but
two of those qualifications. Heck, I'm still trying to save up enough
pennies to get a decent 2M rig... the one I have only covers every 30 KHz
from 146.01 to 147.99, and I had to add a PL encoder! :-/

II> How about foxhunts? Those are a fine way to sharpen the DFing skills.
RD> We have a regualr once-a-month hunt that is slowly growing to cover
RD> wider and wider areas of the region.

We, (the local club), are SUPPOSED to have monthly foxhunts here, too, but
apathy runs rampant. The last hunt only had 3 teams out, (I know, I was
the fox!), and the one before that had ZERO! And that covers about the
last four or five months!

RD> Lots of practice for tracking mobile and fixed bunnies has been going
RD> on and some of the bunnies are very creative in where they hide, making
 RD> it more fun.
RD>> A trick done here a few months ago was someone was re-transmitting a
RD>> simplex conversation from 2m to 70cm for -OTHERS- to recieve on 440
RD>> and re-transmit to the input of several 2m repeaters at the same time.
II> Boy! I guess idiocy seeks it's own level, huh? :-<
RD> Given that the target was a local bucket mouth I can see why it was
RD> done, but they could have easily gone over and -told- him to shut up
 RD> instead.
II> Ya, finding the one on 440 would be the way to do it in that case,
II> (assuming that it wasn't being relayed again on another 440 frequency).
RD> No it was only being transmitted on one 440 frew by a mobile close to
RD> the source to others farther away. The resulting re-transmissions were
RD> of varying noise levels and clarity, but easy to tell who it was
 RD> talking.

... A repeater lets more people hear you make an a** of yourself.  :-}
