Hi, Jeff;

II>You should have recveived it by now, as it was Snailed last Monday or
 II>Tuesday.
JK> Yup. It got here in only two days, can you believe that?

Heh heh... FidoNet was a lot faster than the Snail this time... you
posted your msg on 9/8 and it arrived the morning of 9/22! I guess
Fido must have gotten constipated again. :-/

 II> ... I hope
II>you can find service literature on it, since both resistors were so
II>cooked that the value could not be determined either with an ohmmeter
II>or by reading the color code.

JK> I wondered about that, since I was expecting to get all the parts.
JK> But I guess if they were that cooked, there's no point in complaining.

I am terrably sorry about that. I discovered, however, why it cooked:
BOTH of the battery packs are shorted! One is a dead short and the other
only has about 1 volt after being charged for about 15 minutes at 600 MA!
And I was only trying to charge one, not both at once. I can't understand
why the fuse didn't blow! Oh well, back to the drawing board, I guess.
:-[

JK> I do wish you'd have packed it better though. A couple inches of
JK> packing material on each side is standard, and might have kept the
JK> mounting post (where the screw goes to hold it together) from breaking
JK> when they dropped the box.

I'm very sorry about that, too. The only boxes I have are many times
the size of the charger, so I had to make one, (as you could tell),
and I am (obviously) not an expert packer. I did pack it as solid as I
could with popcorn, and thought that it would travel ok that way. I am
very sorry that it didn't.

JK> It looks like I'm going to have to buy the
JK> manuals from Motorola (expen$ive), since I'm not having any luck
 JK> finding them elsewhere.

If you can't find them here, you might try to CLASSIFIED echo.

JK> It's amazing how much it costs to get an
JK> inexpensive radio on the air!

I know what you mean about getting an inexpensive radio on the air. I was
really lucky with the HF that I got from John Jewkes. All it needed was a
little alignment and an antenna and it was on the air. The 440 HT,
however... when I feed it 12 V through the charging jack I added it seems
to work ok, though I still haven't succeeded in getting crystals for the
local repeaters for it. But when I put one of the battery packs on...
zilch. Oh well, live and learn, I guess. :-<
