Oh I do a lot of looking / trying different lures also. I suspect that
I like fishing tackle as much as fishing! When the weather is bad I
take my lures out and play with them. Change the hooks around, sharpen
the hooks, play with the soft plastic lures. Maybe I'm trying to
picture how they behave in the water, or how to fish them so they will
appeal to fish.
A lot of times when I'm out on the water I'm just fooling around. Sometimes
I do weird things just to experiment and try to find fish. That's what
happened one day last Summer. I tried all kinds of lures - spinnerbaits,
spoons, worms, surface lures and nothing happened. Then I made a mistake.
I cast my worm onto shore. As I reeled in, I thought I felt something.
So I threw up on shore again. Reeled in. Nothing. Again. Nothing.
Again. Nibble. That's when I figured it out. The fish are real close
to the shoreline. Within inches. Fish in the middle of the river and
nothing happens. Fish right at the shoreline and catch fish after
fish after fish. I think fish might be living in the undercut river banks.
From the boat I cant see that there are holes just under the waterline
where fish hide.
Bill Dance said that bass like edges, and I think he is right. Whenever I
caught a bass, there was some kind of edge very close by.
