RD>> If you have seen the news then you know what has been going on up
RD>> here with the freezing rain storms.
II> Yep, I've been following it on The Weather Channel. There are over
II> a million people in Maine that STILL don't have electricity, and it's
Was too busy with our mess up here to even get near a Tv for more than a few
minutes for the 6pm local news.
II> been over a week. Several have died, either from hypothermia or CO2
II> from gas stoves and/or emergency generators.
Same thing here. People running a generator INSIDE the house and running a
wood stove with a partly-blocked chimney.
RD>> During this emergency we have had some idiot playing games with a
II> It would serve him/her/it right if they had to do without power and
II> needed help but couldn't get it. I hope you find the twit and give
II> 'em a well-deserved "vacation" from being on the air. >SMASH!< ;-o
It is one of local idiots who has done the same stunts before.
They will be delt with shortly.
RD>> This was NOT the time nor the place to be an idiot and this jack-ass
II> The RIGHT time to pull crap like that is _NEVER_, but some people just
II> can't understand that. What kind of a sadist does it take...?
No sadist Ivy.
This jerk is well praticed at what it does,it just chose the wrong time to
prove how much of an idiot they are and provide a target for the tracking
team that was active just for this sort of thing.
RD>>> Now with APRS DF-ing is easier to do with one stationary point
RD>>> and several mobiles using the APRS software to nail the twit.
II> I am getting ready to build a Handi-Finder with a mod that makes it
II> switchable between "Figure-8" and "Cartioid" patterns. (Found plans for
II> both in some old QST's that were given to me). The hardest part is
II> finding the IC chip called for, though I suppose I could build the
II> equivelent circuit, (a free-running multivibrator).
What chip is it?
I can look it up in my cross referances and see if it it still available.
RD>> It would if there were enough people willing ot take the time to
RD>> learn how to use the APRS software to do DF-ing.
RD>> Sometime in the spring we must get a group together and play with it
RD>> more.
II> How about foxhunts? Those are a fine way to sharpen the DFing skills.
We have a regualr once-a-month hunt that is slowly growing to cover wider
and wider areas of the region.
Lots of practice for tracking mobile and fixed bunnies has been going on and
some of the bunnies are very creative in where they hide, making it more fun.
RD>> GPS units here with RS-232 ports are in the $299 Canadian range and
RD>> up. Cost depends on what features you want or need the unit to
II> I suppose so... the more chrome anything has, the more expensive it
ts.
Yep.
RD>> A trick done here a few months ago was someone was re-transmitting a
RD>> simplex conversation from 2m to 70cm for -OTHERS- to recieve on 440
RD>> and re-transmit to the input of several 2m repeaters at the same time.
II> Boy! I guess idiocy seeks it's own level, huh? :-<
Given that the target was a local bucket mouth I can see why it was done, but
they could have easily gone over and -told- him to shut up instead.
RD>> chicken out and turn in their buddies involved to avoid taking the
RD>> full blame.
II> Ya, finding the one on 440 would be the way to do it in that case,
II> (assuming that it wasn't being relayed again on another 440 frequency).
No it was only being transmitted on one 440 frew by a mobile close to the
source to others farther away. The resulting re-transmissions were of varying
noise levels and clarity, but easy to tell who it was talking.
