I heard that they got some slightly-larger-than-normal waves on
the north west coast. But it was quite a way from the epicentre,
the open seas allowed the waves to disipate.

Down here, about 3000km further on in a direct line, and matbe
twice that around the coast, we saw/felt nothing.

Yes, it is a massive tragedy. So many people have been killed.
They'll never know exactly how many, as many of the bodies will
never be found -- washed too far out to sea to ever return to
land, or buried to deep to find.

And most of those who survived have lost their homes and everything
else...

The total cost may yet get as high as the Christmas spending in
the Western world... excuse my cynicism....
