Reception range depends on two things: where you are, and your antenna.
If you are in flat country or on a hilltop, you'll get a lot more range
than if you're in hills-and-valley country. That's particularly true if you
just use the telescoping antenna or duck that comes with the scanner.
If you are in marginal terrain, a rooftop antenna can do wonders for a
home scanner. A mag-mount antenna makes for much better mobile reception of
distant signals than just using your handheld scanner on the car seat with
its duck.
