It is my impression that the redactor of the book of Genesis had several written sources to work with. In places the sources were saying essentially the same thing. But, each source had details that the other sources did not. The redactor took all the information and put it together, much as us Christians do today with the four gospels. Some of the accounts the redactor used, did not fit well with other accounts, but rather than choose which statements were preferable in the story, the redactor included both. This gives some Christians real problems. Sometimes one can blend two accounts together and they fit without difficulty. When I see a Christmas card with shepherds seeing a bright star over Bethlehem, I know that Luke said nothing about the shepherds seeing a star. Other Christmas card scenes picture Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, Ox, Ass, shepherds and wise men all in the same picture, which would present a problem. Some, nowadays, include the little drummer boy. Now these are quite harmless and kind of nice, but I think that the redactor of the book of Genesis did something similar, when he blended his several sources toghther in writing his book.
