The following is a letter sent by NRA's Office of the General
Counsel in response to an article appearing in the Michigan Gun
Owners' February, 1998 newsletter.

Dear Mr. Gargin:
     I have been shown a copy of the February 1998 issue of your
newsletter.  In this newsletter, in an article which bears your
by-line, I find the following quote attributed to Mrs. Tanya
Metaksa, Executive Director of NRA/ILA:
          Live to fight another day.  Turn in your guns.  The
          debate has now become one of gun confiscation rather
          than one of gun control.
     Mrs. Metaksa never spoke the first two sentences in this
quote.  By joining the two fictitious sentences to the actual
quote, you have created the impression that Mrs. Metaksa said
exactly the opposite of what, in fact, was said.  If your readers
should believe that Mrs. Metaksa actually said everything that
you incorrectly attribute to her, it would be extremely damaging
to her reputation among gun owners, as well as damaging the
interests of the NRA.  We demand that you retract the quote in
the next issue of your newsletter.  As this has been spread about
on the internet, we also expect you to post retractions in the
appropriate newsgroups.  Finally, I expect that you shall
respond, by return mail, indicating your intent to conform to our
demand and tendering an apology to Mrs. Metaksa.
