However, using a VM is probably only a "guaranteed" sandbox for as long as it is not a common practice. As soon as VMs become commonly used to avoid malware, the malware authors will look for holes they can poke through to access the guest system. For example, if I download a file I want to keep, can I be sure I haven't got other stuff?
