Maybe it's always been "SF=science fiction" in books,
"SF=science fantasy" in movies?  Consider that the top two
grossing films ever were "Gone with the Wind" followed by
"Titanic" and after that there's a huge list of broadly science
fiction, fantasy and/or horror movies for maybe 20 or the
next 25.  The movie industry could easily have adopted SF
to mean all three genres without book people noticing.
