| subject: | Physio... 2. |
on 08-04-09 14:12: Ardith Hinton to James Bradley re: Physio... 2. AH> Deep breathing is a very useful skill. As a AH> woodwind player I do it naturally now. But it did take AH> some conscious effort at first.... :-) Us drummers know nothing about that, except how good the French horn cuties look doin' it. (Remember: Proximity to the percussion section weighs heavily on our sight line.) AH> Concerning meditation... maybe, maybe not. Dallas ran AH> across a news item recently about a study of which parts of the AH> brain were most active during meditation. The frontal area AH> lit up like a Christmas tree. And then, when the AH> researchers asked an experienced meditator what he'd been AH> doing, he said he was opening the third eye. The third eye AH> is in the same area... i.e. the same part of the brain you AH> may be using routinely if you are an introvert or an intuitive thinker, AH> as I am. This sort of stuff fascinates me although it is AH> difficult to understand at times. IMHO the scientist & the AH> swami are saying essentially the same thing, using AH> different words. But folks in crisis tend to rely heavily AH> on their preferred reasoning style. If they've dismissed AH> meditation (or whatever) for years they probably won't give AH> it a second thought even when they have very few other AH> options left. I'm more hopeful about those who can say "I AH> don't know AH> ... I don't have enough data." Assuming this woman AH> attended the seminar of her own free will, however, she may AH> not be as unreceptive as she sounds. Sometimes people on AH> the verge of change kick & scream quite vigorously about AH> it.... :-)) I was a student too, so I let the class sus (SP?) its own level before I opened my mouth. (Rocking the boat? |-) If someone from there one day lops a finger tip off, and still thinks running nd screaming is the preferred first step, I just hope I'm there with a video camera. (Yes, if they hit a gusher, I'd drop the camera and donate my belt to the cause.) In retrospect, if other participants gather a few techniques, that would make my work complete. I was thinking at the time, that this boisterous gal wanted to discredit what she couldn't understand, and wanted the comfort in communal ignorance. AH> Makes sense to me... I test salespeople by asking questions AH> to which I already know the answers & I test medical AH> professionals in much the same way. They can earn bonus AH> points for admitting what they don't know. Dallas & I also AH> test for humour on occasion. We work well together as a AH> comedy team... [grin]. Gracie and Alan? As my understanding of medicine is always lacking, I still have to rely on blind faith. I do however like to play dumb to see if an "expert" is trying to baffle me. AH> to remain open to such possibilities. :-) The option to that is baffling. "Head in the sand" seems to work for some though, just don't expect me to explain it. Like when a person professes to know *nothing* about computers, they all seem to know how to plug them into the wall and find the power switch. I too have to realize my limits. When a specialist was explaining the bursas to me and once the Latin started flying, I had to stop her with, "Too much information." My grey matter glass was full, and my concentration had to be diverted to how I was going to pilot my vehicle home after the ROM. I consider myself a curious guy, but I reluctantly had to concede my learning curve had to slope *very* slowly post op. AH> Once again... I understand, but I can't offer any AH> solutions. JB> You're in good company! AH> I think so. And that's important too.... ;-) That beats every dissertation on The Meaning Of Life I have heard to date. Now, if I hear a wopper, I'll be the first to post it here, but don't hold your breath. ...
