Never heard of anything like that for Duke.  Sounds more like a cheat to me.  
:)  Try Tomb Raider.  That game has exactly what you're talking about sans 
the crosshair.

The bots in the Atomic edition of Duke are pretty tough, I don't know about 
the ones you've tried, but a fake Dukematch with 7 bots can get really hairy. 
 Registered Duke with the Plutonium pack _is_ the Atomic edition, so either 
way will get you what you want.
