XP Pro, or Win2k, use GPEDIT.MSC, go to:

 Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components.

Select Windows Update, and set the following policies:

Configure Automatic Updates to Enabled, pick a time and day.

Specify Intranet Microsoft Update Server to enabled, and set an INTERNAL IP
address or server name (see example on that page.

Click OK to exit.

What this will do, is over-ride the built in Windows Update checking
mechanism, and tell your computer that there is an internal WSUS server.
The fact that it can't find one, will NOT send it off to Windows Update.
(I've accidentally when doing initial setup, mistyped the url, and the
particular machine NEVER updated.

IF there is no Windows Update template in the Windows Components, right
click on Administrative Templates, and select ADD. When the list of
installed templates appear, click ADD, and from the next list, pick WUAU,
which will add the basic Windows Update template to the Windows Components
group of templates.

THAT should keep you from auto connecting to Windows Update.

You can still go to the Windows Update site at YOUR leisure to grab/install updates.

Most of these can be set domain wise through Group Policy in Active
Directory as well, which could be used to globally stop internal machines
from auto updating.
