Synchronet does not, and has never required a nodelist for anything.
Synchronet only requires you setup your sbbsecho.cfg (or echocfg as a GUI)
properly. It's basically a route table of sorts.

It's probably your mailer that requires that nodelist, but Synchronet doesn't at all.

He probably set up his "mailbox" or "filebox" as the
same directory as the outbound directory. That's usually the only way you
will start receiving the .?lo, .try, .bsy/.csy etc files - which is of
course the wrong way to setup a BSO mailer.

Sure, but you seem to be left with some extra cruft, eh? (.clo/.dlo/.hlo
files as well as possibly others)
