OK. I went right through my own records - and came up with the right
answer. Phoned the company's share registry and found not 400 but 2200
shares certificated, in 2 certs: 1800 issued in '95, and 400 recently.
The rest are on CHESS. Now from my records, the only 1800 you could have
are from the purchase on 16/12/94 - presumably issued in early '95. The
400 are obviously the "change" from an original cert of 2200, either the
very first purchase on 29/11/94 or (probably) the one on 15/2/95.

So then I had a long conversation with BT. *They* think (thought) they
actually were holding 2200 in certificated form, correctly it should be
1800 that they have plus your 400. By the end of the conversation she
had agreed that something was wrong, not just the current situation but
something in their procedures that let it happen. She will be
investigating this and will revert this week.

In the meantime, you should send your 400 cert to BT (not me). I spoke
to "Wendy", so maybe you should mark it to her attention.

In summary,

  1) You own 17,100. (The share registry confirms this.)

  2) 14,900 are on CHESS. (As per your statement and confirmed by the
                           share registry.)

  3) BT think they are holding 2200 certificated, I think they're
     holding 1800.

  4) They will investigate and I have instructed them to lodge the 1800
     onto CHESS.

  5) You will send them the 400 and they will ditto.

  6) BT will confirm the position to me.

  7) BT have fucked up and they don't understand how or why (but agree
     that they have), and will be investigating.
