It might be ATAPI, it might be SCSI, it might be "proprietary".
It'd be nice if you knew what sort of port was on your SoundBlaster - it
comes in handy when playing with operating systems that talk directly to
the hardware. :-)

That still doesn't mean you'll need *everything*. BTW, have fun with TeX;
I've been doing my monthly reports with it, and have been using it for my
thesis (well, to be precise, LaTeX2e atop TeX).
There are at least two GUI front-ends to TeX out there, too.
