August Abolins said to Bob Gearhart at 02-27-03 10:45 Subject: "picture stories" -> ..The HBSS stood for Hill Billy Snap Shooter. So -> far as I am concerned, the best photographer ever at picture story -> telling and one of my most admired people for his talent -> http://www.angelfire.com/ky2/cumberlandgapbc/index20.html AA> Interesting because Mr.Clark would take pictures from below looking AA> up! Also.. it looks like he accomplished those photos without flash - Shooting up at the stage. AA> unless the studio was brightly lit. How fast was the film back in the Probably using Tri-x at 400 ASA, Most likely for that series he used a Rollieflex shooting 120. Could be a Lieca M3 with a 50mm f:2. Maybe a 35mm f:3.5 for some, but I doubt it. Those were his favorite choices in a lens. The Lieca and Rollie were first camera choices, simply for the quiet shutter. the 6cm square film for the Rollie gave him a moderate telephoto if he wanted to crop. Two lenses for the Lieca, one on camera, one in a pocket. A Weston light meter and a pocket full of film completed his photo kit. No big bags that said "hey look at me, I'm a pro and aren't you lucky I'm here to make you famous." He was into available light and seldom thought to use flash as that imposed his presence on the subject or the function. He left the flash thing to the newsies with their 4x5 graphics and focal plane bulbs. He had to make folks comfortable with his presence first as he went about 6'4" at about 300 pounds. He had a way of talking and moving that immediately made you feel comfortable. You might have been the center of his story, but he made you feel as though you were taking a part in helping him tell a story about something else. Homespun humor, a little awkward, not a handsome man that drew attention to himself, let him fit in most places and get the intimacy that made his pictures stand out. He was my hero, but his hero was Margaret Bourk White. Bobfer ...
