Greece is an aging suburb and I'm sure it has some pockets of poverty.
However, in comparison to where I grew up and to where I teach, it is a
relatively well-to-do suburb. When I was a kid, growing up in the city
(30 years ago), the schools were very highly regarded. As far away as I
live (100 miles) and this many years later, we still read of innovations
taking place in that district.
As an example, when Art and I last exchanged messages, he seemed
somewhat aghast when I explained that in our district we have no
department chairpeople and no department secretaries. I think he was
department chair of a fairly large mathematics department in his district.
