SK> Hi Tom,
SK> I can appreciate that someone might have an attitude like the one you
SK> represent above, given the way the current system works. But is a
SK> student with only a GED obtained in the manner you suggest, really
SK> ready
SK> to go to the university and skip over the remedial coursework?
I'd see no reason why the GED "grad" is any less able, given what I've
seen of the overwhelming majority of college freshmen who did graduate from a
conventional HS program!
If the GED "grad" is any less able, it is hardly because the majority of
conventional HS grads are able to go to college and not take remedial
courses. I doubt that Harvard has many GED "grads" as freshmen, but even it
has plenty of remedial coursework.
SK> Somehow I
SK> doubt it. And these days the universities are talking more and more
SK> about eliminating or severly curtailing the remdial course offerings.
I'd just say that is a better reason for colleges to make their
admissions requirements reflect what is needed to handle the nonremedial
coursework than it possibly is to deny admission to GED "grads".
