I threw caution to the wind and... it worked!!!!
For the benefit of others and myself, here's linux.txt from my system...
This document was written by Paul Edwards, 3:711/934{at}fidonet,

1. Get the Infomagic Linux Developer's Resource Sept 1996 CD set
(6 CDs).
2. On disk 1, go into "slackwar\bootdsks.144". Copy rawrite.exe.
If you have a Soundblaster CDROM and an IDE hard disk, copy
sbpcd.i. Otherwise, read "which.one".
3. run "rawrite" to create your boot disk.
4. Go into "slackwar\rootdsks". Copy rawrite.exe and color.gz.
Find a utility (e.g. "gzip -d") to decompress color.gz. You
might have to rename color.gz to color.z. You might be able
to get gzip.exe from slackwar\install, but I couldn't (error).
5. run "rawrite" to create your root disk.
6. Reboot your machine from floppy (boot disk).
7. Hit enter at the prompt.
8. Insert root disk when prompted.
9. Run "fdisk /dev/hdb" for the second drive (hda for first, etc).
"p" to print partition table. You need to use "t" to change
the type of one of your partitions to 0x83 (linux) instead of
FAT. "w" to write out new partition table. Quit.
10. Run "setup".
11. Near the end of setup, choose to put lilo on the root partition.
12. Run OS/2's fdisk, go to the linux partition, and "add to bootmanager".
Obviously I've made a few assumptions about your system here.
Feel free to read the 7 million different readme files in 7
million different archives in 7 million different directories
on 6 different CDs instead.
