This has todo with the fact that os/2 buffers stdout. Nothing will be displayed until a newline is printed. You can either put a fflush(stdout); after each printf (that doesn't include a /n or use setvbuf(_IONBF) to disable the buffering (for watcom anyway.) setvbuf is ansi, so your complier would have it, although look it up anyway.
