DVD writers write data at a faster rate (to blank DVDs) than CD writers are
capable of.  All the DVD writers I've seen were capable of reading and
writing CD too. but not as fast as the fastest CD writers (for writing CDs
52x is not uncommon) but if you stick a DVD in there they'll write the same
data in less time than even the fastest CD writer can.
