JR> I picked up the Hawkwind album _Levitation_ several months ago and
JR> find myself really getting into it lately.
Cool. Good album.
JR> What others of thier albums are of the same or similar style to this
Most Hawkwind in any given time frame tends to be similar; here's what I
have in my collection centering on _Levitation_:
The Church of Hawkwind 82
The Text of Festival - Live 1970-2 83***
Zones 83*
Chronicle of the Black Sword 85
Live Chronicles 86**
Levitation 87
The Xenon Codex 88
NightRiding Collection 90*
Space Bandits 90
Palace Springs 91**
California Brainstorm 92**
* compilation albums
** live albums
*** DO NOT buy this one. For serious completists only. Maybe.
Text is a very badly done live recording. I love virtually all the
Hawkwind I've yet encountered, but this is one of two that I never
listen to (the other being _Bring Me the Head of Yuri Gagarin_).
Consider yourself warned. :-)
Chronicles is excellent, if you're into the idea of a concept album
based on Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion books, particularly the
story of Elric and the black, soul-devouring sword, Stormbringer. The
Live one is one of my favorite Hawkwind albums. Most guitar I've heard
on one of their albums.
Space Bandits is a bit different, including a female singer and a Sioux
prayer.
The last two would probably be a good choice for you. They're nicely
done live recordings, are still similar in style to _Levitation_, and
include updated versions of some of their old, "classic" songs, like
"Time We Left", which will give you a little bit of an idea of their
earlier material.
JR> All I ever seem to see in the music store that I visit most often is
JR> compilation albums from them and those typically do not interest me.
I tend to avoid compilations for any artist that I'm collecting,
generally speaking, for similar reasons. However, Hawkwind doesn't
really have any "greatest hits" (considering most people don't even know
who they are), and their compilations tend to include songs, or covers
of songs, not on studio albums. Part of the reason I bought the
Nightriding Collection was for a cover of "Bring It On Home".
