Well, *something* was wrong (perhaps there were some errors during the
compile that you missed), because I've never had that problem compiling
numerous kernels (most recently, 2.0.24).

Some may be set as modules by default, unless you change them.

Those are the kernel images prior to being compressed.

You want "zImage" - that's why you typed "make zImage"

Why? Why not just use the FAT/MSDOS file system support in the kernel and
use the real thing?
