-=> On The 31 Mar 98 23:04:08 Jonathan screamed Sega at Shannon <=-
ST> ...And Sega is not guilty of letting it's systems flounder? Have
ST> we forgotten their last three projects so far; Sega CD, 32X, and now the
ST> Saturn? I think their track record is proclaiming enough proof of their
ST> ability, or willingness, to support their game machines. Shall we even
ST> forget the Master System and Game Gear? Gamers today can probably tell
ST> you what a NES and a Game Boy are, but most have no idea about the SMS
ST> and Game Gear.
JF> The Saturn only lost steam in the last year or so. Then, when
JF> people realized they could make games more easily on the PSX, they
JF> switched. Sega's marketing and support had little to do with it; they
JF> put practically every port they could on the system! And as for
JF> gamers' memories, I think most of them DO remember the Master System
JF> and Game Gear. I do!
EVERY ONE remembers the Master System.. I had the original, with the built
in slug/maze game.. Game Gear's were crap tho'.. The Game Boy easily
superceded the GG..!
ST> With Sega's record it looks like the Genesis was more of a fluke
ST> than a show of Sega's ability to successfully market a game machine.
JF> I think it was more of a combination of good games (with the
JF> prerequisite "killer title," Sonic) and good performance than any
JF> flukes. The same should happen with the Katana; it'll be the first
JF> (and only, for awhile) console which will let you play Model 3 arcade
JF> games at home, and it can handle almost anything else you can throw at
JF> it right now. Messiah is only going to be on the PC and the Katana;
JF> not the PSX, not the N64.
I'd say it was a combination of both.. The SNES was only released 2 years
after the Genesis, so Sega had a good lead (Just like the PS now).. But it
was weaker in every "department" than the Snes, xcept the Processor.. the
Genesis' Processor was a lot faster then The SNES, but was let dow by
everything else, especially the sound..! The Genesis had the Tinniest sound
EVER..
