I know EXACTLY how you feel!  I am on SSI and when my only 2M rig, (a HT),
died, I just about went nuts!  I had just obtained a 440 HT, and it was
the generosity of a local 440 repeater owner that sent me the codes to
link his machine to the main 2M repeater that let me get on 2M at all
until I could get back on 2M myself.

See if you can contact someone in the local Ham community and put the
word out that you need it fixed but can't afford to pay a shop to do it.
I'll bet that someone will turn up that will be happy to do it for free,
or at most for the cost of parts, (which may only run a couple of
dollars).  And if they have the micro switch, spring or whatever is
needed in their junque box, it may cost you nothing!
