Ultimate Calculator makes ideal tool for college students
Miami - May 29, - The Ultimate Calculator (UCALC) is a program well
suited for students enrolled in math, science, or business courses. It
incorporates features typically found in advanced hand-held calculators,
such as graphing, equation solving, and scientific functions; but it is
more convenient, with an advantage in speed, precision, better display,
mouse support, interaction with other software, and affordability.
UCALC has a 5-star rating on the Ziff-Davis Interactive web page,
where it is described as "extremely powerful". The rest of the
description can be read on the ZDI page, after which a fully functional
copy can be downloaded for evaluation.
An example file that comes with UCALC shows how it might be used
to calculate a home loan payment, integrate, convert feet to inches, or
find the density of an object. Another example file shows how UCALC plots
polar, parametric, or cartesian equations, while allowing the user to zoom,
trace, fill, or superimpose graphs. UCALC also comes with online help,
and a sperate text file manual which explains all features.
UCALC runs on IBM compatibles under DOS. A Windows version is due
in the fall of 1996.
The latest version allows the TSR window to be resized, includes
mouse support for graphs, and allows graph coordinates to be saved.
Features added in each new release are a direct result of feedback from
users. The author is readily available in cyberspace, and takes
suggestions very seriously. This is what keeps the program at a
competitive edge.
UCALC is designed to work well even on palmtops or earlier computer
models with limited hardware resources, yet it takes advantage of better
system configurations when available. Stephen M. Smith, biology professor
at the University of Waterloo says: "He's done a great job. Now, if only
some of the commercial software houses would follow his example for
compact code!".
To download a copy log on to http://www.zdnet.com/zdi/software, and
choose Programs & Utilities, followed by Math & Engineering. Compuserve
users can find it in the science forum (GO SCIENCE), in library 5,
filename: UCALC.ZIP. Internet users can FTP it from garbo.uwasa.fi,
pc/math/ucalc30c.zip. Registgration is $25.
