I cut my teeth on some earlier versions of Linux, and now am on RedHat. The
swaying of a lot of distributions is to make it a plug-and-go ordeal. Sure
there's a learning curve, but most of that can be sidestepped or avoided
altogether with the GUI booting. There's "Live CD" distributions
now that let
you boot with a CD, and operate with that, not touching your HD.
Anyway... This not being the Linux-Newbie echo... (-;
