Hello Barry
Replying to a message of Barry Laws, Jr. to Michael Reed:
MR>> influence, Depeche Mode, Queen(Epecially QueenII) and Metallica(
MR>> ...And Justice For All) for example.
BLJ> I have a lot of Queen CDs...their early stuff (Queen, Queen II, Sheer
BLJ> Heart Attack, & Night At The Opera) reminds me a lot of Syd Barrett
BLJ> (his solo work & his Pink Floyd work). That's (IMHO) when Queen was
BLJ> their best (they had their own Interstellar Overdrive in the form
Queen are probably my favorite band. This is my favorite period of there
material.
BLJ> of Brighton Rock). I just wish they would put out a box set that
BLJ> would include their songs from Smile, Wreckage, and Larry Lurex
I've only heard one bit of Smile, on a Queen documentry on telly here in UK.
I really did like it though.
BLJ> (for some reason I like the Smile song "Step On Me" and the Lurex
BLJ> song "Goin' Back"...did you know former Smile bassist Timothy
BLJ> Staffel co-wrote "Doin' Alright" with Brian May on the Queen I
I noticed that it was writen with someone outside the band. But I didn't know
who.
BLJ> album). Too bad they never did a concept album like Tommy or The
BLJ> Wall (unless you count Queen II a concept album since side one was
BLJ> called the "white" side and side two was called the "black" side
Have you read much about Taosm? A lot of this is about the harmony of
oposites (black\white). As well as the black side whiteside thing, Brian's
side really echos a lot of the themes raised in Taosm. It's worth picking up
a book on this subject just to understand some of the references. I agree it
would have been interesting if Queen had worked on something like the wall.
Some of the songs on A kind Of Magic fit in with the film Highlander pretty
well.
Bye then,
