There are several ways to get into Ham radio.  Probably the easiest
is to go to your neighborhood Radio Shack and get a copy of "Now You're
Talking."  Be sure to get the edition which came out this year, not
the old one.  The old one had a blue cover, I think the new one has a
brown or tan cover.  (They changed the questions earlier this year.)
 
This paperback book will tell you all you need to know to get into
Ham radio, whether you want to learn the code and get a Novice license,
go for the no-code Technician license, or learn the code and get the
Technician plus license.  The code test for Novice and Technician plus
is only 5 words per minute, and Radio Shack also has tapes which will
help you learn code if you want to go that route.
 
Another way to get a license would be to hook up with one of your
local Hams, who could either teach you what you need to know or point
you to Ham classes, which are given at least a couple of times a year
in most parts of the country.
