echo: survivor

subject: Physio... 2B.

On or about 10-06-09 20:23, Ardith Hinton allegedly uttered "Physio...
 2B." to
James Bradley:

AH> [...]. Awhile ago I mentioned that I'd had surgery to
AH> remove a benign tumour from one of my saliva glands & half
AH> my face was paralyzed for a year afterwards. Since then
AH> I've often noticed wetness near the incision... typically
AH> around the time of the full moon. I assumed the portion of
AH> this gland which was left in place must still be producing
AH> saliva but had nowhere else to put it because the duct into
AH> my mouth no longer exists. Then my dentist informed me
AH> that the nerve(s) which should be signalling the gland to
AH> produce saliva are causing the skin to produce sweat. In
AH> other words... she thinks the nerves joined up incorrectly,
AH> as they did in your case. She said I could have Botox
AH> injections if I find it unbearable. I think I'll pass!
AH> Suffice it to say I have no conscious control over what
AH> these nerves do, at least not yet... [wry grin].

This "wetness" feeling is *inside* your mouth? (I'm sure we went
through this
last time, but you know how my retention is?) Forgive me, but maybe
menstruation instead of moon gravity is having an influence on the timing of
the nerve activity? Of course your MD knows all about this? (Boy am I just full
of questions today? Why should I stop now? How many more do I have? P-)

What is lost on a lot of people, is a MDD is an MD first. They passed anatomy
too. Your dentist sounds like a keeper!

[With all respect, I cringe when I hear "cancer survivor".]

AH> The term is often used by SyOps as a descriptor
AH> when they want to let their users know in twenty-five
AH> characters or less what the echo is about, and distinguish
AH> it from other echoes with similar titles which came along
AH> after we did. But it is rather simplistic & potentially
 AH> misleading.

Well, and fine. I have no quip with the term itself. It just gives me no heroic
feeling personally. I give anyone who flies the flag a wide a birth and kudos
for their empowerment, but as you know, surviving my bout was the beginning of
my trouble. I fly the same flag, but it's upside-down.

 JB> "Iatrogenic victim" [...]

AH> I still cringe when I hear the word "victim".
We've made it
AH> over the first few hurdles... and now we're dealing with the
AH> aftermath. I'm well aware that cancer treatment often
AH> leaves some unpleasant souvenirs behind. We can't just
AH> "get on with our lives" as if nothing out of the ordinary
AH> had happened to us. But I think it's important that we not
AH> lose sight of what we learned from the experience. On a
AH> physical level, you're finding creative ways of adapting
AH> your surroundings to suit your individual needs. On a
 AH> mental/emotional level,
AH> you're questioning many things you were taught in the past & examining
AH> them in a new light. I'd say you understand intuitively what this echo
 AH> is about. ;-)

Silk purse out of a sows' ear... It's not pretty, and it stinks, but
swallowing it is tantamount to "survival". Expecting someone not
to gag when it
passes the gullet, is unrealistic.

AH> We knew a guy years ago who had difficulty getting hired
AH> because of a hand & a leg which didn't work very well when he got
AH> nervous. He had mild CP, but that didn't stop him from
AH> driving a rally car! He drove cab for awhile... then he
AH> landed an accounting job which didn't require meeting the
AH> public. Now he's running his own accounting business &
AH> apparently doing very well.... :-)

Who said, nothing good could be made from sows ears? Now, if I can get a
silk-lined, sows ear purse into the hands of Paris Hilton, I might have a
product to sell. *8-0
